10 Outdoor Spring Cleaning Projects

outdoor spring cleaning

Spring cleaning isn’t always fun for many of us. But it is important. As the winter end and we begin looking forward to spring and warm weather, something within us pushes us to get our homes in order by cleaning, organizing and throwing away things we’ve hoarded over the winter months.

But who says spring cleaning is limited to the interior of your house?
The outside of your home could likely use a little refreshing after a cold, dreary winter, too!

It’s Time For Home Exterior Cleaning

Here are home exterior cleaning projects that will drastically improve the appearance of your home in Columbus, and, even more important, will provide much-needed maintenance and upkeep that will save a lot of money in years ahead.

1. Gutter Cleaning

Spring is the optimal time of year to clean out your gutters, since a lot of leaves and debris pile up during the fall and winter months. The pollen count is at its highest during the spring, making a huge mess in your gutters if they aren’t properly cleaned.

Plus, bugs and critters are searching for places to build their homes during spring, so getting your gutters cleaned out will help to stop an infestation in your home.

Gutter cleaning consists of cleaning the inside and outside of your gutters, removing mold, mildew and rust stains and returning them to a like-new appearance.

2. Window Cleaning

Exterior window cleaning is a must for spring cleaning. Ground floor windows will not cause you too much of an issue, but second and third floor windows are tougher to reach.

Cleaning windows by hand is a hard chore, and will require a lot of supplies, not to mention climbing up and down a ladder! A soft wash or professional cleaning of your home’s windows is the best solution to get the panes and the outer frame nice and clean.

3. Pressure Washing

You do not want clean gutters and clean windows on a dirty house. Which means you are going to want to pressure wash your home too!

Pressure washing is quick, effective and doesn’t cost very much. You can pressure clean your house, outdoor furniture, patios, porches and walkways with very little effort. It will knock off dirt and mud so they will not permanently stain your home, and you can also stop the spread of mold, mildew and allergens.

4. Driveway Cleaning

Clearing off your home’s driveway and giving it a good cleaning may seem silly since you’ll just be driving on it, but actually, a clean, well-cared for driveway can increase the curb appeal of your home.

A professional pressure washing service can do wonders for driveway cleaning, whether it is pavement, asphalt, stone or another material. Also think about adding a gravel border to your home’s driveway to really make it pop!

5. Patio Cleaning

Your home’s patio probably gets the most use in the summer months, so it can be easy to overlook it during the winter since you aren’t doing as much outdoor entertaining, leisure or grilling. Your patio might be in rough shape the first time you step onto it in the spring.

Soap and water – and a little hard work – can sometimes be enough for patio cleaning, but if there are signs of mold or mildew, you need to think about a more aggressive option, like professional power washing, to ensure that friends and family can safely enjoy your patio all summer.

6. Roof Cleaning

Algae and moss are typical home roof issues in Columbus. While you’re cleaning the outside of your home, it is a great time to pressure clean your home’s roof too, but you’ll need to use a different process than what you use for the rest of your home’s exterior cleaning.

If you notice streaks on your home’s roof, algae is probably the cause. Moss is typically obvious, too. These particles cannot be scrubbed off shingles, nor can you pressure wash the roof. Both of these methods will ruin the shingles on your home’s roof.

The ideal process for roof cleaning is to spray the shingles with a half-bleach, half-water mixture and leave it sit. This mixture will kill all organisms on your home’s roof without reducing its lifespan.

7. Spruce up the Front

The front of your home is likely what most people passing by see, so make the best impression possible for visitors, neighbors and for yourself! Returning home to a beautiful exterior will improve your day, and will inspire you to spend more time outdoors.

Clean your porch with soap and water or a good pressure wash. Wipe cobwebs and mud off of the front door, and consider painting it for a really fresh look! Clean forgotten areas including the porch ceiling, light fixtures and ceiling fans, too.

8. Organize Outdoor Tools

You’ll soon be spending more time outdoors, so spring is a wonderful time to organize everything you’ll need for outdoor work.

Gardening tools as well as pool care equipment should all have a specific area outside your home – a place that it is safe from harsh weather and not in sight so it isn’t a constant eyesore to anyone. Spending the time to organize in the spring allows you to enjoy the outside of your home so much more throughout the time of year that you are going to spend the most time outdoors.

9. Lawn Care & Landscaping

Your lawn, trees and bushes make a major impact on the overall look of your home.

Remove weeds around your flower beds and walkways and driveway, till up areas where you will be planting later on and sweep off walkways. You can also spray pre-emergent weed poison to make yard care easier on yourself throughout the summer. Trim all the bushes too.

10. Clean the Grill

After being unused for months, your gas or charcoal grill could use a good cleaning, too. Leftover grease and food from your grill are definitely unappetizing, but even worse they can also make you and your family sick.

Wipe it down to get rid of ash, then scrub the grates with a scrubber or grill brush (so you don’t leave behind metal particles that can sometimes get into food) and a detergent or degreaser.

You can probably complete all of these projects over the course of a few weekends but it is going to be a lot of tough work. Instead, give us a call!
